Wading shoes and wading boots

Wading shoes and wading boots

Wading shoes and wading boots are used in a variety of fishing applications for fly fishing, spin fishing and predator fishing in streams, rivers, lakes and the ocean or in boats. In many cases they are also used when working. With them you can wade in the water without getting your feet wet. Choosing the right sole gives the necessary grip on the bottom of the water.

Wading shoes provide a compact fit on the foot and are usually worn over waders. For example, in warm salt water, longer hikes or at lakes in the high mountains, a wading shoe is often worn only over a sock. A wading boot sits looser on the foot than a wading shoe. Wading boots are usually knee-high or go up to the hip.

What is the difference between waders and wading boots?

With the wading shoe you usually need waders with neoprene booties over which you wear the wading shoe. The wading shoe gives a compact hold on the foot by the lacing or the closure system. When putting on you need a little time.

You put on waders only over a sock. The wading boot usually fits looser on the foot than a wading shoe. Wading boots are knee or hip high. This allows for quick donning or doffing.

Function/Use

When wading, it is very important to have enough grip in his wading shoe or wading boot, depending on the water underground.

The wading shoe offers an excellent hold on the foot through the lacing or the closure system. It is usually put on over the neoprene footling of the waders, which has a closed system, so no water can penetrate from the outside into the waders. There is water between the wading shoe and the waders.

In order to additionally prevent gravel or sand from entering between the wading shoe and the waders, this area is protected by a Gravel Guard. This part is located on the top of the neoprene feet of the waders and is pulled over the upper part of the wading shoe when donning. The neoprene foot of the waders is not damaged, so it is protected.

A crucial point is that waders in combination with a wading shoe allow you to wade deeper into the water than with a wading boot, without getting wet.

Waders are mostly used in waters that are not so deep, or are used when fishing from the shore. With this variant, putting on or taking off is usually faster than with waders and wading shoes. However, the grip on the foot is often not as good.

Which soles do I use with waders and wading boots?

The sole provides the necessary grip when walking in the water or on the ground. There are a few options:

Felt soles: are often used with larger stones, which are covered with moss, due to better grip. Felt soles vary widely in quality of material and durability. Compressed, compacted felt has a longer life. A tip: Shoemakers specializing in orthopedic shoes are happy to help renew felt soles. In doing so, the renewed felt soles really stick to the wading shoe.

Unfortunately, felt soles do not always dry out completely after use, residual moisture remains. As a result, pathogens can be transported from water body to water body. For this reason, the trend is toward vibram soles.

Rubber or vibram sole: In wading shoes with a high-quality interior, or with good cushioning properties, the soles work better on the ground. The material is now more elastic and adapts better to the surface. The Vibram sole is a high-quality, durable rubber sole.

Spikes: To create an even better grip on stony or rocky ground, additional spikes can be screwed into the felt, rubber or Vibram soles. Disadvantage is the sound which is generated by the spikes when stepping on the stones and is carried by the water.

Material and workmanship - premium quality

There are lighter and heavier waders, higher and lower, stiffer and softer. A lot depends on the quality of the wading shoes. Always choose the ideal combination for you for the use you need. For safety reasons, we recommend cuts that extend above the ankles.

The materials used in quality wading shoes have changed in a positive way. Wading shoes have become lighter and absorb less water. Wading shoes are a specialized product and must withstand many extremes. Water and carried sediments can be aggressive and stress or damage the material. Special materials and adhesives are used and specially processed in production for all areas. Conventional leisure shoes often dissolve into their components in a short time in the water during tests.

High-quality wading shoes have a special interior with optimal cushioning of the shoe. This keeps you fatigue-free for longer and allows you to enjoy your day.

Numerous wading shoes are also equipped with neoprene inserts and side parts, this creates a pleasant wearing comfort and supports in cold weather.

When buying a wading shoe, you should pay special attention to the selection of the appropriate sole. There is a choice of a felt, or rubber sole possibly in combination with spikes.

Wading boots are offered in plastic, natural rubber or as neoprene wading socks.

Premium quality is usually already apparent when they see the processing, the material and the wading shoe with the details in front of him. There are very big differences.

Types of waders and wading boots

With wading boots there is a short version which reaches to below the knee, or a waist-high version to below the crotch. Depending on the water temperature, a neoprene insert is recommended to protect against the cold.

In wading shoes we distinguish the height or stiffness of the shoe, the outer material, the lacing or closure system, the inner lining e.g. neoprene lining, the footbed and the intermediate cushioning. An important point is also the choice of the right sole.

Premium brands

As premium products, we recommend the quality brand Simms for wading shoes.

Well-known names of Simms are: G4 Pro Boot, G3 Guide Boot, Guide Boa Boot, Flyweight Boot, Headwater Boot, Freestone Boot and Tributary Boot. The wading boots are offered with a wide variety of soles, in a wide variety of styles. The wading shoe models from Simms are very common and well-known.

The Simms brand is characterized by the use of special materials and innovative ideas in wading shoes. Product know-how, many years of experience in the production of high-quality wading shoes and constant development often make the difference. Simms products are also very durable.

Optimal fit and the right size - what should I pay attention to?

Wading shoes should fit very well. If the waders are too small, a cramping feeling at the toes quickly develops, this can lead to great pain in a short time. Wading shoes that are too large rub against the heels, which can destroy the material of the boot. This reduces the life of a wading shoe.

When choosing the right size, you usually specify your actual shoe size, and the manufacturer always adds to the size you choose, for example, a neoprene foot of the waders. If you wear thick socks, or even 2 pairs of socks, or have a very high instep, you should choose a shoe number larger. One size is additionally about 8 mm more length.

Always assume the maximum number of socks when buying.

What prolongs the life of waders and wading boots

The life of a wading shoe and wading boots is first extended by choosing the right size.

In connection with water, it is always important to store and dry products in an airy place before transport or after use. Mildew can form due to wetness and little air. Mold is organic and it can destroy seams/threads or adhesives.

Do not store products under car windows, UV radiation can affect materials.

What do I wear in waders?

Depending on the season and temperature, it is important to wear appropriate socks under waders and wading boots.

We recommend natural materials on the skin: for example, Geoff Anderson technical merino socks with a small amount of synthetic material. A synthetic thread is wrapped with a merino thread. These socks are available in different thicknesses and heights.

Merino socks have the advantage over synthetic socks that they have a special enzyme which regenerates the merino socks and reduces odors. In addition, the material gives a very comfortable feeling, is breathable and the technical merino wool is very durable
